As a small business owner, you may have heard of a Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) but aren’t sure if it applies to your business.
A CRP is a statement that outlines an organisation’s carbon footprint and sets targets for achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050. It includes details of current and future initiatives to reduce emissions, as well as a commitment to the plan and publishing it on the organisation’s website.
While not all businesses are required to have a CRP, there are two regulations that may make it mandatory for your business.
The first is the Streamlined Energy & Carbon Reporting (SECR), which applies to businesses with 250 or more employees, a turnover of more than £36m, a balance sheet of more than £18m, or that are listed on the London Stock Exchange.
The second is the Public Policy Notice (PPN) 06/21, which requires all suppliers bidding or involved with central government contracts to have a CRP in place and published on their website.
Even if your business doesn’t fall under these regulations, there are still many reasons why having a CRP can be beneficial. For example, a CRP can help your business become more efficient and reduce costs by identifying opportunities to reduce emissions. Additionally, some supply chains may require their partners to have a CRP in place. Finally, it can help to portray a positive company image and show your commitment to social values.
Overall, a Carbon Reduction Plan can be a valuable tool for small business owners looking to reduce their environmental impact and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. While not all businesses are required to have a CRP, it’s worth considering if it could be beneficial for you and your business.
